The laptop screen looks black or very dark, but when you shine a torch at it at an angle, you can make out the outline of the image — the desktop, open windows, the mouse cursor? This is an almost certain sign that the problem isn’t with the screen itself, but with its backlight, a separate module responsible for illuminating the image. We check this during a free inspection (5–15 minutes).
In short: the backlight is a separate power module for the panel, independent of the screen itself that displays the image. Backlight failure doesn’t automatically mean the entire screen needs replacing.
Our experience
We test the backlight module independently from the rest of the panel, using meters and testers that allow us to determine whether the problem lies in the backlight module itself, in the cable powering it, or in the control circuit on the motherboard. This distinction has a direct impact on repair cost — the backlight module is a significantly cheaper component than the entire screen.

How to distinguish backlight failure from other faults
The key test is done with a torch: aimed at an angle at the dark screen with the laptop switched on. If you can then see a faint outline of the image, it means the screen is generating a correct signal, but it isn’t being illuminated — and this points to the backlight module, not the screen itself.
When you’re looking for backlight repair
We most often see laptops where the screen is noticeably darker than it should be, despite brightness being correctly set in the system, or where the image is only visible under very strong external lighting.
Symptoms of a backlight problem
- The screen appears black, but a torch at an angle reveals the outline of the image.
- Screen brightness is very low, even though system settings are set to maximum.
- The backlight flickers or switches on with a delay after startup.
- The problem worsens when the screen is tilted to a certain angle.
A torch aimed at an angle at a „black” screen is one of the simplest, yet most reliable tests we do. If you can see the image in the background, it’s the backlight, not the screen — and the repair usually works out much cheaper then.

What happens if you delay
Damaged backlighting won’t fix itself, and using a laptop with a practically invisible image is simply inconvenient and makes everyday work difficult. The problem usually doesn’t progress quickly, but there’s no reason to delay, since repairing the backlight module is typically straightforward and quick.
How backlight repair works at our service centre
1. Torch test
We check whether the image is visible in the background when angled light is directed at it, which confirms that the screen itself is working.
2. Power module measurement
We use a tester to check whether the backlight module is receiving the correct power supply.
3. Module replacement or repair
Depending on the result, we either replace the backlight module or repair the power cable.
4. Brightness test
We check the uniformity and full brightness of the backlight across the entire screen surface.
Extended diagnostics, if needed, takes 1–3 working days. It’s free if you decide to go ahead with the repair — if you choose not to, the cost is agreed and stated upfront.

Frequently asked questions
Is backlight repair cheaper than screen replacement?
Yes, usually — the backlight module is a much cheaper component than the entire screen.
How can I check myself if it’s the backlight?
Shine a torch at an angle onto the dark screen with the laptop turned on — if you can see the outline of an image, the problem is with the backlight.
Can the backlight get worse on its own over time?
Yes, flickering or dimming backlight usually gets progressively worse, so it’s not worth delaying the repair too long.
Is this a common problem in older laptops?
Yes, backlight modules wear out over time, just like other electronic components.
How long does a backlight repair take?
Usually 1–3 working days, depending on the availability of the right module for the specific model.
The cost depends on the scope — from repairing the power cable to replacing the entire backlight module. You’ll find current rates in the price list.
