The laptop lid is getting harder to open, there’s a clear cracking sound when lifting the screen, and the display panel bends slightly in the process? These are the first signs of worn hinges — and this is one of those problems where it really pays not to wait. During a free inspection (5–15 minutes), we check how advanced the wear is and whether simple maintenance will still be enough.
In short: loose hinges caught at an early stage only require maintenance — disassembly, adjustment and lubrication. This works out several times cheaper than repairing hinge mounts torn out of the casing, which happens when the problem is ignored for too long.
Most common causes — from most to least likely
- Dried-out lubricant in the hinge mechanism — the lubricant in the hinges wears out over time, typically after around two years of regular use.
- Loose mounting screws — after thousands of openings and closings, the mounting mechanism loses its original tension.
- Hinge mounts torn out of the casing — an advanced stage that occurs when earlier symptoms have been ignored.

What you can check yourself before you come in
- Listen carefully when opening and closing the screen — a characteristic cracking sound is an early warning sign.
- Check whether the screen „falls” on its own in any position, instead of holding the set angle.
- Look from the side to see if the casing around the hinge is even, or if there’s a visible gap or deformation.
- Check whether the screen clearly bends or deforms when opening the lid.
What NOT to do
- Don’t force the laptop open or closed if you feel clear resistance — this accelerates damage to the mounts.
- Don’t try to tighten visible screws yourself without understanding the construction — it’s easy to accidentally damage the casing or screen.
- Don’t put off the repair hoping the creak will „go away on its own” — hinges don’t regenerate themselves, and the problem gets worse.
A creak when opening and an increasingly stiff lid are signs you should come in before the mounting points tear out of the casing. At this early stage, maintenance is enough — disassembly, adjustment and lubrication. That works out many times cheaper than a full repair.

How we diagnose it
1. Assessment of wear stage
We check whether we’re dealing with early lubricant wear or already with damage to the mounting points in the casing.
2. Casing condition check
We check whether the casing around the hinge is still intact or already cracked or deformed.
3. Maintenance or repair
At an early stage we disassemble the hinge, adjust and lubricate the mechanism; when mounting points have torn out we reinforce the casing with adhesive and a 3D-printed element.
4. Operation test
We check the smoothness of opening and closing and the stability of the set screen angle after repair.
Extended diagnostics, if needed, takes 1–3 working days. It’s free if you decide to go ahead with the repair — if you decide against it, the cost is agreed and quoted upfront.

Why Apenfix
Frequently asked questions
Does a creak when opening always mean a serious fault?
No, at an early stage regular maintenance is usually enough — adjusting and lubricating the mechanism, without the need for major intervention.
What if the mounting points are already torn out of the casing?
We carry out a complete restoration — we reinforce the casing with adhesive and a 3D-printed element, with a warranty of up to 2 years.
Is epoxy repair a good solution?
We don’t recommend this method — it holds worse than professional restoration, and the casing often can’t be disassembled again afterwards.
How often should hinge maintenance be done?
The lubricant in the mechanism typically wears out after about two years of regular use — it’s worth checking the condition earlier if you notice cracking sounds.
How long does hinge repair take?
Maintenance usually takes 1–3 working days, similarly for complete restoration, depending on the scope of work.
The cost depends on the stage of wear — from simple maintenance to complete casing restoration. Current rates can be found in the price list.
