You press the power button, and the laptop stays silent — no LED, no fan, no image on the screen? This is one of the most common situations we encounter, and in most cases it doesn’t mean a serious fault at all. Before you start worrying about data loss or repair costs, do one thing: bring your laptop in for a free inspection that takes 5–15 minutes. By then we usually already know what’s going on.
In short: the most common cause of a laptop not turning on isn’t a faulty motherboard at all, but a damaged drive. Checking takes a few minutes and is free — don’t guess, bring your laptop in for assessment.
Most common causes — from most to least likely
- Drive failure — the laptop tries to start but freezes on a black or blue screen. SSDs rarely „slow down” gradually — they usually either work or stop working overnight.
- Dust buildup and system overheating — after a complete disassembly and cleaning, the laptop often comes back to life without replacing any parts.
- Motherboard damage — blown transistors, damaged charging port or frozen EC controller. Requires soldering under a microscope, but doesn’t always mean high cost.
There’s no single statistic that fits every model — we diagnose each case individually, starting with the simplest and cheapest causes.

What you can check yourself before you come in
- Connect the original (or a known-good) charger and leave the laptop plugged in for 15–20 minutes — sometimes the battery is completely flat and the LED lights up with a delay.
- Check whether the charging LED lights up at all when you connect the power supply — this tells us whether any current is reaching the laptop.
- Connect the laptop to an external monitor via HDMI — if an image appears, the problem lies with the screen or screen cable, not the motherboard.
- Listen carefully when trying to start it — a quiet fan sound or a short click from the drive means the laptop is actually „alive”, just not displaying an image.
What NOT to do
- Don’t take the laptop apart yourself — without a microscope and knowledge of test points, it’s easy to make the situation worse.
- Don’t repeatedly force the power button if you suspect a short circuit — you risk further damage to the motherboard.
- Don’t remove and reinsert the drive 'just to try’ — if the problem is with the data, every additional operation reduces the chance of recovery.
We connect the laptop to a lab power supply and watch how much current it draws. If it draws no current at all — we look for a break in the power circuit. If it draws maximum current and the short-circuit indicator lights up — we disconnect immediately, because that’s a short on the motherboard. But if the current rises gradually, from 0.3 to 1.5 amps — that’s a good sign, the laptop is initialising.

How we diagnose it
1. Current measurement
We connect the laptop to a 19V lab power supply and observe how the current draw behaves — this shows at what stage of startup the device is stuck.
2. Drive check
Because it’s the most common cause, we check the drive as one of the first steps, before moving on to more time-consuming motherboard diagnostics.
3. Full cleaning
If the laptop hasn’t been serviced in a long time, we disassemble and clean it — sometimes that’s enough to restore a contact that’s been lost.
4. Motherboard diagnostics under microscope
When the cause isn’t the drive or dust, we examine the traces and circuits on the motherboard under a microscope, using BIOS and KBC programmers.
Extended diagnostics, if needed, takes 1–3 working days. It’s free if you decide to go ahead with the repair — if you decline, the cost is agreed and quoted upfront before we begin.

Frequently asked questions
Is the inspection really free?
Yes, the initial inspection takes 5–15 minutes and costs nothing. If extended diagnostics are needed (1–3 days), they’re free when you decide to proceed with the repair.
Will I lose my data if my laptop won’t turn on?
Usually not. If the cause is the drive, data can usually be recovered, especially if nothing has been overwritten on it before.
How long does a repair take?
Typically 1–3 working days, depending on whether extended diagnostics are needed and what parts are required.
Is my laptop even worth repairing?
In most cases, yes. We only decline extreme cases, such as a completely burnt-out motherboard — and we tell you straight away, honestly.
Can I bring my laptop without the charger?
Yes, but if you suspect a power issue, it’s worth bringing the charger too — it lets us quickly check whether any current is coming out of it at all.
The repair cost depends on the cause — from simple cleaning to soldering on the motherboard. Current rates can be found in the price list.
