If you’ve searched online for what to do with a frozen laptop, you’ve probably come across the advice: „disconnect the battery, hold the power button, wait a minute”. We understand that this is recommended almost everywhere on the internet. But from our experience at the repair centre, we’ve seen what this can sometimes lead to — and that’s why this page goes against popular guides. If your laptop requires deeper intervention, we’ll do it safely during a free inspection in 5–15 minutes.
In short: the only safe thing worth doing at home is holding down the Power button for 30–60 seconds, without opening the casing and without disconnecting the battery. Physically disconnecting the battery in many models carries a risk that outweighs any potential benefit.
Why we don’t recommend doing this yourself at home
- It’s easy to break the battery connector — in models like Asus or Dell, the battery connector is delicate, and careless disconnection can physically damage it.
- Short circuit risk — when opening the case, a screw can fall onto the motherboard and cause a short circuit, turning a simple problem into a serious failure.
- In some rare cases it actually helps — but you can achieve the same effect safely, without taking the laptop apart.

Co faktycznie robi twardy reset
The purpose of a hard reset is to clear the temporary memory of the power circuits and controller, which sometimes helps when a laptop has 'frozen’ at the hardware level. The same effect — in the vast majority of cases — can be achieved by holding down the Power button for a longer time, without opening the case. If that doesn’t help, it means the cause is deeper and requires diagnostics, not another attempt at resetting it at home.
What you can safely do at home
- Hold the Power button for 30–60 seconds, depending on your laptop model.
- Disconnect the power adapter during the reset, then plug it back in.
- Disconnect external USB devices — sometimes they prevent the laptop from starting properly.
- Wait a moment after restarting before you try to turn the laptop on again.
What NOT to do
- Do not open the laptop casing yourself if you have no experience in electronics repair.
- Do not disconnect the battery without first checking exactly how it is secured in your particular model.
- Do not try resetting endlessly — if 30–60 seconds does not help, it is a sign the problem requires diagnostics.
We understand the internet suggests otherwise. But we have seen laptops where an attempt to disconnect the battery yourself turned a simple case into an expensive repair of the connector or motherboard.

How we do it at the service centre
1. Safe opening of the casing
We know the construction of the specific model and where the delicate connectors are located.
2. EC controller reset
We perform a full disassembly and reset of the power controller if it is the cause of the freeze.
3. Check after reset
We verify whether the problem has actually been resolved or if the cause lies deeper.
4. Further diagnostics if needed
If the reset does not solve the situation, we proceed to full diagnostics of the drive, BIOS and motherboard.
Initial diagnostics are always free. Extended diagnostics (1–3 working days) are free if you decide on the repair, and charged only if you decline — we quote the price upfront.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the internet recommend disconnecting the battery if it’s risky?
Because in theory it works — the problem is that guides rarely mention the risk of damaging delicate connectors in specific models.
Does holding down the Power button really work?
In most cases where a hard reset helps at all, yes — it’s a safe equivalent with the same effect.
I have an Asus laptop — is it particularly risky?
Yes, along with Dell these are models where it’s especially easy to break the battery connector during careless disassembly.
What if the Power button reset doesn’t help?
It’s a sign that the cause is deeper than a controller freeze — it’s worth doing a full diagnostic then.
Does the reset itself cost anything?
If we perform it as part of the free inspection, there’s no additional cost.
The exact cost of further repair, if it turns out to be needed, depends on what the diagnostics show. You’ll find current rates in the price list.
