You’ve noticed a crack in your laptop casing, especially near the hinge, and you’re wondering if it’s a serious problem? In most cases, yes — but the good news is that the sooner you fix it, the less it costs. We usually complete the repair in 1–3 working days.
In short: a cracked casing usually starts near the hinge — which is by far the weakest point of the casing in most laptops, with the left hinge cracking most often. The longer you leave it, the larger the crack becomes and the greater the risk that the screen cable running through that area will also be damaged.
Most common causes of casing cracks
- Material fatigue at the hinge — after years of daily opening and closing, the plastic in that area simply crumbles
- Lack of hinge maintenance — when the lubricant wears out, the hinge moves more stiffly, which puts additional stress on the surrounding plastic
- Carrying in a backpack without proper protection — minor impacts and pressure accumulate over time
- A small drop or impact — even from a low height, if the laptop hits an edge
- Opening the screen with one hand by the corner — unevenly stresses the casing, especially with an already weakened hinge

What you can check yourself
- Locate the crack — if it’s near the hinge (most often the left one), this is the most typical and most commonly encountered case.
- Check whether the hinge still holds the screen in the set position, or whether the screen „sags” or wobbles.
- Listen when opening and closing — a cracking sound near the crack means the plastic is still working and the crack is probably getting larger.
- Assess the size of the crack — a single scratch or break is usually a straightforward repair; multiple cracks at once may mean the casing is already severely fatigued.
What NOT to do
- Don’t try to glue the crack yourself with ordinary glue or epoxy — a poorly done home repair makes professional restoration much harder later
- Don’t force the screen open or closed if you hear a clear cracking sound — you could further damage the screen cable
- Don’t put off the repair 'for later’ — a small crack near the hinge almost always gets bigger over time
- Don’t assume from the start that the entire casing needs replacing — in most cases restoration is enough
A cracked casing near the hinge is one of the most common reasons clients come to us — and it’s almost always the left hinge that cracks. The sooner we repair it, the less extensive the restoration needs to be. Waiting almost always ends with the crack getting bigger and the repair becoming more expensive.

How we assess it during the inspection
1. Location and extent of the crack
We check whether the crack affects only the casing or also impacts the hinge and screen cable.
2. Hinge assessment
We check whether the hinge only needs maintenance or full restoration together with the casing.
3. Quote
We provide a fixed price for the restoration, tailored to the actual extent of the crack.
4. Client’s decision
You decide whether we proceed with the repair — no pressure and no hidden costs.
The scope and time of the repair depend on the actual condition of the casing found during the inspection.

Why Apenfix
Frequently asked questions
Why does a laptop case crack most often near the hinge?
This area bears the greatest load every time you open and close the screen, so the plastic fatigues over time. The left hinge cracks most often.
Can a cracked case be repaired without replacing the entire housing?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases restoration is sufficient — we reinforce the cracked area with construction adhesive and 3D-printed plastic, which is significantly cheaper than replacing the entire housing.
Can I continue using a laptop with a cracked case?
In short — yes, but carefully and ideally for as short a time as possible. A crack near the hinge tends to grow larger with each opening and closing of the screen, and in extreme cases it can damage the screen cable.
How long does cracked case repair take?
Usually 1–3 working days, depending on the extent of the crack and whether missing components need to be 3D-printed.
The exact cost of cracked case repair depends on the laptop model and extent of damage. You’ll find current rates in the price list.
