You’re working on your laptop and it suddenly shuts down, as if someone pulled the power — no warning, no message? It’s unpleasant, but usually we can quickly identify the cause. Most often it’s overheating, less commonly the battery or power supply. During a free inspection (5–15 minutes), we check at what point and under what conditions the shutdown occurs — this quickly points us to the cause.
In short: if the shutdown happens during demanding tasks and the laptop is hot at the time, it’s almost certainly overheating. If it happens regardless of load and battery status, it’s worth checking the power supply and motherboard.
Most common causes — from most to least likely
- Overheating — the laptop shuts down to protect components when the temperature reaches a critical level. This most often happens during gaming or heavier tasks.
- Worn battery — the laptop may shut down suddenly when the battery can’t maintain stable voltage, even if the indicator still shows charge remaining.
- Unstable power supply — a loose charging port or damaged charger can cause momentary power loss and shutdown.

What you can check yourself before coming in
- Note whether the shutdown happens during heavier tasks (gaming, video editing) or during normal browsing.
- Check whether the laptop is noticeably hot on the bottom or near the keyboard at the time.
- Observe whether the problem appears more often on battery or when the charger is plugged in.
- Check whether the battery level shown in the system matches the actual working time — a sudden drop from 50% to zero is a warning sign.
What NOT to do
- Don’t ignore repeated sudden shutdowns — over time they can lead to permanent component damage.
- Don’t force the laptop to restart immediately multiple times in a row if it’s hot — let it cool down.
- Don’t continue working on a swollen battery if you notice it — this can be a direct cause of sudden shutdowns.
We always ask at what point the laptop shuts down — whether it’s during gaming or just browsing the internet. That’s the first thing that helps us distinguish overheating from a battery or power issue, even before we open the casing.
Apenfix technician
How we diagnose it
1. Interview about circumstances
We establish exactly when the shutdown occurs — this significantly speeds up diagnostics.
2. Temperature measurement under load
We check whether temperatures reach critical levels during demanding tasks.
3. Battery and power test
We check the battery voltage stability and whether power from the charger flows evenly.
4. Motherboard diagnostics
If the above components are working properly, we examine the power circuits on the motherboard under a microscope.
Extended diagnostics, if needed, takes 1–3 working days. It’s free if you decide to proceed with the repair — if you decline, the cost is determined and quoted upfront.

Frequently asked questions
How to distinguish overheating from a battery problem?
Overheating usually occurs during demanding tasks and the laptop is noticeably hot. Battery problems more often appear regardless of load.
Can this be dangerous for the components?
The shutdown itself is a protective mechanism, but if its recurring cause is ignored, it can damage components over time.
Laptop shuts down only on battery — what does this mean?
This is a common sign of a worn battery that cannot maintain stable voltage under load.
Will I lose data during a sudden shutdown?
A single sudden shutdown usually does not threaten data, but repeated ones can in rare cases damage the drive — it’s worth not delaying diagnostics.
How long does such diagnostics take?
Initial inspection takes 5–15 minutes, and full repair usually 1–3 working days.
Repair cost depends on the cause — from cooling system cleaning to battery replacement or power system repair. Current rates can be found in the price list.
