Before you start suspecting the drive, BIOS or motherboard, there’s one thing worth checking first — and it takes literally a few seconds. A connected USB stick or external USB drive can, in rare cases, completely block the laptop from starting. If that doesn’t help, we’ll check everything else during a free inspection in 5–15 minutes.
In short: a faulty USB stick or USB drive rarely, but occasionally, blocks the laptop from starting. It’s also the simplest and cheapest possible cause to rule out — just disconnect the device and try again.
Why a USB stick might block startup at all
The BIOS checks all connected devices at every startup, looking for the one to boot the system from. If a connected USB stick is damaged or has an unusual data structure, the BIOS may try to boot from it instead of the internal drive — and freeze during that attempt. It’s a rare situation, but very easy to check before you start suspecting something more serious.

When to suspect this specifically
- The laptop stopped starting right after you connected a new USB stick or external drive.
- The problem only appears when that particular USB device is connected.
- After disconnecting the device, the laptop starts normally.
What you can check yourself
- Disconnect all USB sticks and external drives connected to the laptop, then restart it.
- If you have several USB devices, disconnect them one by one to check which one exactly is causing the problem.
- Check the USB ports for visible damage or bent pins.
What NOT to do
- Don’t format the suspect USB stick „just in case” — if there’s important data on it, consult someone who knows about data recovery first.
- Don’t assume straight away that it’s definitely a USB drive — if disconnecting devices doesn’t help, the cause lies elsewhere.
This is one of those causes we check quickest, because the test takes literally a moment. It’s rarely actually a USB drive, but when such a case does come up, the client is surprised how simply it resolves.

How we diagnose it
1. Test without USB devices
We start the laptop without any external devices connected, to rule out this cause.
2. Current draw measurement
If USB isn’t the cause, we move on to standard measurement with a 19 V laboratory power supply.
3. Hard drive and BIOS check
We check the other most common causes — the hard drive and BIOS configuration.
4. Full diagnostics, if needed
If simple causes are ruled out, we move on to extended diagnostics.
Initial diagnostics are always free. Extended diagnostics (1–3 working days) are free if you decide on repair, and charged only if you decline — we give the price upfront.

Frequently asked questions
How often is this really the cause?
Very rarely — but since checking takes literally a moment, it’s always worth doing before suspecting more serious issues.
Can this damage the laptop?
Simply connecting a faulty USB drive usually doesn’t damage the laptop — it only causes the boot process to freeze.
What if disconnecting USB devices doesn’t help?
That means the cause is elsewhere — most commonly in the internal drive or BIOS configuration. Check the other pages about laptop startup issues.
Can external keyboards and USB mice cause this too?
This happens even more rarely than with USB drives, but it’s theoretically possible with a faulty device.
The exact cost of further repair, if it turns out to be necessary, depends on what the diagnostics reveal. You’ll find current rates in the price list.
