Not every repair involves replacing an obvious part. Sometimes the cause of a fault hides where no one would think to look. Here are a few stories straight from our workshop in Warsaw.
In short: this is a collection of stories from our daily work — cases where finding the fault required something more than a standard procedure. We’re showing them not to sell anything, but because they illustrate well what laptop diagnostics really looks like when the problem isn’t obvious.
Most common causes of unusual faults
- The fault doesn’t show typical symptoms — for example, a component doesn’t heat up and doesn’t signal a failure
- The problem occurs irregularly, making it difficult to reproduce on demand
- The manufacturer doesn’t supply a key replacement part
- Several components show symptoms of the same fault, which obscures the diagnosis
- The fault concerns a very small component, invisible without proper equipment

Stories from our workshop
Asus Zenbook that kept shutting down for no reason. Everything pointed to the screen — voltages and frequencies were normal. We replaced the screen. Didn’t help. We ordered a new screen cable. Nothing either. We checked all voltages again — everything fine once more. Eventually it turned out the culprit was a microchip responsible for handling the display panel, which Asus simply doesn’t sell separately. With a very expensive motherboard and no available parts, this particular unit turned out to be unrepairable — and we told the client straight.
A short circuit that wouldn’t reveal itself. One of the more difficult cases was a hidden short in a single, very small capacitor. It didn’t heat up, gave no typical signals, sat in a low-voltage, three-volt line and didn’t always cause a short at all — sometimes the laptop worked normally. Only precise, repeated measurements allowed us to locate it. We desoldered it, fitted a new one — the laptop returned to full working order.
What we DON’T do in such cases
- We don’t guess and don’t replace parts „on trial” without confirming the diagnosis
- We don’t hide from the client when a repair is technically impossible
- We don’t end diagnostics prematurely if a symptom doesn’t yet have a clear explanation
- We don’t promise a deadline until we know the real scope of the fault
The level of difficulty correlates with my level of interest — the more unusual the case, the more curious I am to check what’s actually broken.

How we diagnose it
1. Measuring basic parameters
We check voltages and currents on a laboratory power supply.
2. Eliminating obvious causes
We rule out the most likely components one by one.
3. Analysis under a microscope
We examine individual board components that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
4. Confirming the repair
After the repair, we test the laptop to make sure the fault won’t return.
Not every case is as unusual as the above — most repairs are much quicker and simpler.

Why Apenfix
Frequently asked questions
Do such cases happen often?
No, they’re rather exceptions. Most repairs have a clearly defined cause and follow a standard process, taking 1–3 working days.
What do you do when a repair turns out to be impossible?
We say so directly and explain the reason — just like in the case of the Zenbook model described above, for which the manufacturer doesn’t provide the key part.
Does such diagnostics take longer?
Yes, in the most difficult cases it can take up to a month, but that applies to truly exceptional situations.
Do such stories affect the repair price?
You’ll find current rates in the price list — we always provide a quote before starting the repair.
Why do you share such stories?
Because they show well what our work really looks like when the fault isn’t obvious.
If your laptop has an unusual, hard-to-explain symptom, we invite you for a free inspection.
