Your Dell laptop starts to struggle with office work, spreadsheets and a browser with a few tabs push the machine to its limits, and programmes can freeze without warning? Often, a RAM upgrade is all it takes. At Apenfix, we check this first during a free inspection, and the upgrade itself usually takes 1–3 working days.
In short: Dell laptops — from the office-oriented Inspiron, through the business-class Latitude, to the budget Vostro — have well-documented construction and readily available parts, which makes RAM upgrades straightforward. Before we add memory, though, we check whether RAM is truly the bottleneck — sometimes the culprit is the drive, not a lack of RAM.
Our experience with RAM upgrades in Dell laptops
Dell is a brand where parts are easily available, which makes it simple to select the right memory for a specific model. Disassembly can be somewhat more involved than with other manufacturers — in many models, accessing the RAM slots requires removing the motherboard or a large portion of the casing, so we always work according to the service documentation for the given model. We have documented RAM upgrade repairs in our system for laptops from the Inspiron, Latitude and Vostro series — these are precisely the three lines we service most often. Inspiron is equipment for everyday work and study, Latitude comprises business models also used for remote work with multiple applications running simultaneously, and Vostro is a budget business line in which RAM is often the only performance limitation.

How to check whether your Dell is short on RAM
Before you decide on an upgrade, check it yourself in a few seconds:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc simultaneously — Task Manager will open.
- Go to the Memory tab (Performance → Memory) and look at the usage graph.
- If you have, for example, 8 GB of memory and 7.9 out of 8 GB is in use — nearly 100% on a daily basis — adding RAM will almost certainly help.
- If, on the other hand, you have 8 GB but only 4 GB is in use (or 16 GB, of which 10 GB is used), the reserve is sufficient — the problem lies elsewhere, most often with the drive.
That’s why we always start with a free inspection (5–15 minutes) — to recommend a RAM upgrade only when it will genuinely solve your Dell’s problem.
When you’re looking for help with RAM in your Dell
We see customers who are looking for answers to questions like: „how to add RAM to Dell Inspiron”, „Dell Latitude runs slowly with multiple applications”, „Dell Vostro keeps freezing” or „how much RAM do I need for a Dell laptop”. If this sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.
Symptoms that suggest you should consider a RAM upgrade
- Spreadsheets, browser with multiple tabs and office programs freeze together
- Remote work with multiple applications at once on a Dell Latitude noticeably slows down the system
- Switching between several open applications takes noticeably long
- Opening programs that used to start quickly now takes many seconds
- The Dell laptop has only 8 GB RAM but is used for work with multiple applications simultaneously
With Dell, we always work according to the service documentation for the specific model, because access to RAM slots can be less obvious than in other brands — sometimes you need to remove the motherboard. Before we proceed with disassembly, however, we check in the client’s Task Manager whether a RAM upgrade will actually solve the problem.

What happens if you delay a RAM upgrade
- The Dell will become increasingly noticeably slow during everyday work
- The risk of data loss during program freezes while working on files increases
- Frustration and time wasted on simple tasks accumulate day by day
- It may turn out that the culprit is the drive, not the RAM — the longer you wait, the greater the risk of its failure
How a RAM upgrade in a Dell works at our service centre
1. Free inspection
We check memory usage in Task Manager and assess whether a RAM upgrade will help your Dell. This takes 5–15 minutes.
2. Memory selection
We select RAM modules compatible with your specific Inspiron, Latitude or Vostro model, matched to your budget.
3. Installation
We follow the service documentation for your model, working at a grounded workstation with an anti-static mat.
4. Stability test
We check system stability under load, and when you collect the laptop you can confirm for yourself that it runs faster.
Repair time may vary depending on parts availability for your specific Dell model and the service workload.

Why Apenfix
Frequently asked questions
Can every Dell laptop be upgraded with RAM?
Most Inspiron, Latitude and Vostro models have replaceable memory, though access to the slots varies by model. We check this during the free inspection and tell you straight whether an upgrade is possible.
How much RAM do I need for my Dell laptop?
Check your current usage in Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). For 2026–2029, a comfortable amount is around 16 GB, with 8 GB being the minimum.
Will a RAM upgrade actually speed up my Dell?
Yes, if memory was genuinely the bottleneck. If the laptop has plenty of RAM but still runs slowly, the cause is usually something else — most often the drive — which we also check during the inspection.
How long does a RAM upgrade take for a Dell?
Usually 1–3 working days, depending on the availability of suitable memory modules and the complexity of disassembly for the specific model.
Do I keep the old RAM?
If we’re adding an extra module, the old memory stays in the laptop and works together with the new one. If we’re replacing everything with higher capacity, we return the old modules to the customer.
The exact cost of RAM upgrade in a Dell laptop depends on the model and chosen memory capacity. You’ll find current rates in the price list.
